DJI’s Neo 2 drone offers palm take-off, gesture control, and safer flight

News

DJI has officially announced the Neo 2, a compact, beginner-focused drone packed with creative features and significant upgrades in safety and ease of use. I looked at the original DJI NEO back in September last year. This new release weighs in at just 151g, making the Neo 2 DJI’s lightest drone yet to feature omnidirectional obstacle sensing, and has been designed to act as a personal follow-me camera, perfect for travellers, outdoor adventurers, families, social content creators and of course photographers and videographers wanting to capture themselves at work.

Positioned as a true beginner-friendly follow-me drone, the Neo 2 builds on the original Neo’s success with features that simplify both flight and filming. Users can launch and land it directly from their palm using new one-tap controls, while gesture recognition allows intuitive direction and distance adjustments without needing a controller or app. With just a wave or hand movement, the Neo 2 can ascend, approach, or fly away, ideal for capturing dynamic selfies or group shots.

The Neo 2 also adds voice control, enabling hands-free flying via smartphone or Bluetooth headphones. For more advanced control and extended range (up to 10km), it can be paired with the DJI RC-N3 remote or Motion Controller and goggles for a more immersive FPV experience.

At its core is a 12MP 1/2-inch CMOS sensor with f/2.2 lens and a 2-axis gimbal stabilisation system, delivering crisp, steady footage—even at up to 4K/100fps or cinematic 2.7K vertical video. DJI’s upgraded ActiveTrack technology allows for stable tracking of moving subjects at speeds up to 12 m/s, even during sharp turns or low-altitude manoeuvres.

Content creation is made effortless with SelfieShot mode, which automatically composes and adjusts framing for waist-up, full-body or wide-angle shots. The drone also includes DJI’s signature QuickShots, Dolly Zoom, and MasterShots modes, giving users plenty of creative tools to capture standout social media content.

Importantly, DJI has doubled down on flight safety. The Neo 2’s full omnidirectional sensing system includes monocular vision, LiDAR, and infrared downward sensors, helping it confidently avoid obstacles from all sides. Full-coverage propeller guards offer added protection, particularly in indoor or crowded settings.

With level 5 wind resistance, up to 19 minutes of flight time, and 49GB of internal storage, the Neo 2 is ready for spontaneous adventures. Footage can be transferred quickly over Wi-Fi at up to 80MB/s, enabling fast post-production workflows via the DJI Fly app.

The DJI Neo 2 gives beginners and casual creators the ability to capture cinematic-quality content safely and easily. With gesture control, palm take-off, and advanced tracking, we’ve reimagined what a truly accessible camera drone can be.

Notably, while the Neo 2 launches globally on 13 November, DJI confirmed that it won’t be officially available in the US market through its websites, stating:

“DJI remains committed to the U.S. market and is optimising our strategy to best serve our customers amidst evolving local conditions.”
