New cinema zoom and PTZ controller expand production control

Canon has expanded its professional video ecosystem with the introduction of two new tools aimed at high-end filmmaking and live production: the CN30×40 IAS J R1/P1 ultra-telephoto cinema zoom lens and the RC-IP300 multi-camera PTZ controller. Announced in London on 15 April 2026, the releases reflect Canon’s continued focus on integrating advanced optics with intelligent control systems for increasingly complex production environments.

The CN30×40 IAS J R1/P1 stands out for its exceptional focal range, offering a 30x zoom spanning 40–1200mm, extendable to 60–1800mm via a built-in extender. Designed primarily for Super35mm sensors, the lens can also achieve full-frame coverage when the 1.5x extender is engaged. This versatility makes it particularly appealing for wildlife cinematography, sports broadcasting and remote production scenarios where extreme reach is essential.

Canon has incorporated a newly updated drive unit that enhances usability, including focus breathing correction, improved servo performance and an integrated information display. A USB-C port enables easier setup and maintenance, aligning with modern workflow expectations. Despite its reach, the lens remains relatively portable for its class and is engineered for durability in demanding shooting conditions.

Autofocus capabilities are equally advanced, with support for Dual Pixel AF II and Canon’s Focus Guide, ensuring accurate subject tracking even in fast-moving scenes. Combined with high-resolution 4K and 8K optical performance, the lens is positioned as a powerful tool for cinematic long-range storytelling.

Alongside the lens, Canon has introduced the RC-IP300 PTZ controller, designed to simplify multi-camera operation. Capable of controlling up to 200 cameras, it allows operators to group devices and store up to 100 presets per camera for quick recall. Its compact design includes a 3.5-inch touchscreen preview, joystick controls and IP video inputs, making it suitable for studios, lecture halls and live event environments.

The controller also integrates with Canon’s Auto Tracking applications and third-party tools such as Stream Deck, enabling streamlined workflows and automation. Together, these two products demonstrate Canon’s commitment to scalable, flexible production solutions that cater to both cinematic and broadcast professionals.
