Canon has released a sweeping firmware update for its flagship mirrorless cameras, the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, reaffirming its dedication to the needs of professional news and sports photographers. Announced today in London, the new firmware and system upgrades are set to enhance reliability, speed, and creative flexibility for those operating in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.

The new firmware is packed with practical enhancements, starting with refinements to the electronic viewfinder. On the EOS R1, an improved EVF viewfinder priority mode eliminates lag when the camera is lifted to the eye, delivering instantaneous feedback and a more responsive shooting experience. Action specialists will benefit from the latest Panning Assist algorithm, offering even smoother stabilisation for dynamic tracking of fast-moving subjects—ideal for motorsports, athletics, and wildlife.

Canon has further enhanced the continuous shooting capability. The pre-continuous shooting adjustment menu now lets photographers select from 1 to 20 pre-capture frames on the EOS R1, and 1 to 15 frames on the EOS R5 Mark II, so key moments are never missed. Meanwhile, AI-powered autofocus through nets has been improved, enabling accurate subject tracking even when obstacles like fences or nets partially obscure the action.

Recognising the challenges posed by artificial lighting in indoor arenas, Canon’s renowned flicker detection system—first featured on the EOS R3—now runs continuously on both the EOS R1 and R5 Mark II, alerting users to exposure risks under flickering lights.

For those working to tight deadlines, workflow improvements are front and centre. Both cameras now support high-capacity CFexpress cards up to 8TB, allowing for extended shooting without swapping storage. There’s also C2PA authenticity support for registered news agencies, ensuring robust verification of images in an era of digital misinformation. Photos with a star rating can now be automatically locked to prevent accidental deletion, and FTP transfer order has been optimised to send voice memos before images, aligning with agency protocols.

Canon has also delivered on general usability, with new button customisation options like instant Airplane Mode, expanded exposure simulation with flash across a wider range of camera bodies, and IBIS-peripheral lens coordination now available for the EOS R5 Mark II. Improvements to Servo AF during zooming further streamline performance for sports and wildlife shooters.

Outside of the high-end pro sphere, Canon hasn’t neglected entry-level users. A new firmware for the EOS R50 introduces support for the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE and RF-S 7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lenses, bringing immersive imaging to a broader audience.

In tandem with firmware news, Canon has unveiled the EL-1 (Ver.2) Speedlite flash. This updated model features ultra-fast recycle times, long bursts, advanced wireless triggering, and a bi-colour LED modelling lamp—ideal for action photographers who require reliable, creative lighting on the move.

Canon’s comprehensive suite of updates is a clear signal that it remains focused on supporting professionals in the rapidly evolving world of digital imaging.
