Canon has launched the RF 45mm F1.2 STM, a fast-aperture prime lens designed to bring professional-style bokeh and low-light capability to a wider audience. At just 346g, it becomes Canon’s lightest f/1.2 RF lens and is also the first of its kind aimed squarely at enthusiast photographers.
Today Canon has also announced the Canon EOS R6 III, you can check out our news story and I’ll bring you the full review soon.
This new prime delivers a cinematic aesthetic, made possible by its wide f/1.2 aperture that was previously reserved for Canon’s professional lens lineup. Whether capturing atmospheric portraits or storytelling lifestyle scenes, the shallow depth of field offers strong subject separation and beautiful background blur. The lens is also well suited to low-light photography, unlocking opportunities typically inaccessible with slower glass.

Autofocus is powered by Canon’s STM motor, ensuring quick and quiet focusing for both stills and video work. The RF 45mm F1.2 STM also features a dedicated control ring, separate from the focus ring, giving hybrid shooters tactile control over settings like aperture or ISO.
Other highlights include a metal lens mount for added durability, a 9-blade aperture for creamy bokeh, and compatibility with Canon’s focus breathing correction—particularly useful for video creators. A minimum focusing distance of just 45cm allows for tighter compositions, while the 67mm filter thread makes it easy to pair with common accessories.
Positioned as a creative tool for enthusiasts ready to experiment with depth and expression, this lens complements the growing RF system by offering high-impact performance without the pro-level price tag.
