Fujifilm has officially unveiled the X half, a new compact digital camera inspired by the aesthetic and functionality of classic half-frame film cameras. The X half (model X-HF1) joins Fujifilm’s popular X Series, delivering a retro shooting experience wrapped in a sleek, modern body that weighs just 240g. Available in three colours—black, charcoal silver and silver—the camera is designed for intuitive storytelling with a distinctive vertical orientation.

At the heart of the X half is a 1-inch back-illuminated sensor paired with a 32mm f/2.8 (35mm equivalent) fixed lens, matching the angle of view familiar to users of Fujifilm’s QuickSnap disposable cameras. This thoughtful touch aligns with the camera’s mission to democratise storytelling and make creative photography accessible.

The rear 3:4 aspect ratio LCD is optimised for vertical stills and video, tapping into the shooting style of smartphone users. A highlight feature is the new “2-in-1” mode, which allows users to combine two images or videos into a single in-camera composite, enhancing narrative potential in a single frame. The companion “X half app” further expands this feature, enabling editing, sharing, and printing—including integration with Fujifilm’s instax Link printers.

Adding to the film-like charm is the “Film Camera Mode,” which simulates the anticipation of analogue photography. In this mode, users select a film simulation and number of exposures, cannot preview images until all are taken, and use a frame advance lever after each shot—mimicking the feel of winding film. The app allows digital development and even creates virtual contact sheets.

Thirteen Film Simulations, including the new REALA ACE, and filters like Light Leak, Halation, and Expired Film give photographers a broad creative toolkit. The addition of the Grain Effect and Date Stamp further enhances the nostalgic experience.

Operability is handled through dual rear LCD screens, enabling swipe and tap interactions for seamless control. Despite its vintage look, the X half is forward-thinking in functionality, offering Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration for quick sharing and cloudless convenience.
