Canon has officially announced its flagship full-frame mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS R3, price tag £5,879.99 / €6,689.99 / $5,999, with a release date set for November.
Originally announced as a development project earlier in 2021, we now know that the Canon EOS R3 will feature a newly developed 24.1-megapixel backside-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor and is built for speed. Combined with Canon’s latest DIGIC X processor, the EOS R3 can deliver high-speed continuous shooting at up to 30fps with AE and AF tracking in its electronic shutter mode, and up to 12fps when using the mechanical shutter.
Canon EOS R3 Specs
Aimed at professional sports and wildlife photographers, as well as photojournalists, the new Canon camera offers shutter speeds from 30secs to 1/64,000sec.
The EOS R3’s AF system also promises high speed capability, focusing on subjects in just 0.03secs. Canon’s 1,053-point Dual Pixel CMOS AF II in the R3 features an improved Deep Learning AF algorithm, along with a new vehicle tracking AF mode. Other AF tracking modes include human and animal eyes, body, face detection and head detection. AF tracking in these modes works down to -7.5 EV. A new Flexible Zone allows users to select the size and shape of the Zone AF area.
Canon has also introduced a new Eye Control AF feature that moves the camera’s focus point to where your eye is looking.
In another first, the Canon EOS R3’s electronic shutter can be used with third-party flashes for the first time. Canon has also introduced Flicker detection and a High Frequency anti-flicker shooting mode.
The Canon EOS R3 also promises strong low-light capability with a native ISO range of 100 to 102,400, which is expandable up to ISO 204,800.
Like the Canon EOS R5 last year, the new EOS R3 is one of the new Canon cameras with IBIS technology, or in-body image stabilisation. The new camera provides up to 8 stops of stabilisation when used with IS-equipped RF lenses.
Other features include a new 5.76-million-dot, 120fps blackout-free electronic viewfinder. There is also Bluetooth and 5 GHz WiFi connectivity, a built-in Gigabit Ethernet port and the ability to transmit images via FTP.
Canon EOS R3 Video
While it doesn’t hit the heights of the R5’s 8K video capability, the EOS R3 can shoot 6K 60p raw resolution footage, which provides 50% more detail than 4K. And with 6K CRM raw files, exposure and white balance can be corrected post-capture.
