Canon USA has announced that its Cropping Guide firmware is coming to the EOS R6 Mark III. The feature is aimed at school photographers, portrait studios and anyone shooting high volumes of portraits who needs consistent framing from one subject to the next.

Cropping Guide isn’t new: Canon introduced it in late 2024 for earlier bodies including the EOS R6 Mark II, R7, R8, R10 and R50. Bringing it to the R6 Mark III means the latest full-frame model in the range can now be used in the same high-volume workflows.

On the R6 Mark III, the firmware offers four guide types. For head-and-shoulders portraits there are top and bottom guidelines to fit the head size, with a choice of three head sizes plus a smaller head size option. There are colour-coded cropping guides for 5×7 and 8×10 aspect ratios, so you can see where the print will be cropped and avoid cutting off key details. For full-length portraits there’s a centre line to align the subject, left and right guidelines for props such as balls or rackets, and a bottom guideline for positioning feet.

A paid upgrade

As with the earlier cameras, Cropping Guide is a paid service rather than a free firmware download. In the US, existing R6 Mark III owners can have the feature added for a $120 service charge, or buy the camera with the firmware already installed.

Charging for firmware features has been controversial, but for school and team photographers who shoot hundreds of near-identical frames in a day, consistent framing in camera could easily save that much time in cropping at the editing stage.

The announcement so far comes from Canon USA. Canon UK already offers the Cropping Guide for earlier models through its service and repair centres, but the R6 Mark III isn’t yet listed there, and we’ll update this story once UK availability and pricing are confirmed.
