Yashica has added four new designs to its FUNtastic Keychain Camera range, including a Sailor Boy edition and new Snoopy and Hello Kitty versions, taking the line-up to eight.

Keychain cameras have become one of the unexpected hits of the past year, and Yashica is clearly keen to keep its share of the trend. The FUNtastic Keychain Camera first appeared earlier this year in four designs, and the company has now doubled the range with four more.

The new additions are the YASHICA Sailor Boy, inspired by historic Japanese artwork, a Basketball Snoopy design from the Peanuts collaboration, and two new Hello Kitty versions from the Sanrio tie-up: a Polka Dot Edition and a Cherries Edition. They join the existing Yashica Boy, Snoopy’s Summit, Snoopy Sweet Dreams Home and Classic Hello Kitty models.

Yashica is also sorting the collection into four moods under a “Funtastic World” banner, Wanderers, Dreamers, Sparks and Blush, which tells you exactly who these are aimed at. These are collectable accessories as much as cameras.

What you get

The hardware is the same across every design. Inside is a 1MP 1/4-inch CMOS sensor behind a 3.2mm f/2.8 lens, producing 1440 x 1080 JPEGs and AVI video at 30fps. Images are saved to a microSD card of up to 64GB, and the camera charges over USB-C.

The feature that sets the FUNtastic apart from many rivals is its 0.96-inch screen, which flips through 180 degrees so you can frame selfies and group shots rather than guessing. There’s also a built-in LED light for parties, gigs and late-night shots, along with a set of colour filters.

At just 22g and 6.3 x 2.2 x 2.5cm, it’s small enough to clip to a bag or set of keys and forget about until you want it.

Let’s be clear about expectations: a 1MP sensor is not going to compete with a smartphone for image quality, and that isn’t the point. Much like the Kodak Charmera, the appeal is the lo-fi look, the novelty and the fact that you’re carrying a camera that only does one thing. For younger photographers, it’s a fun and cheap way in.
