Minisforum has added the UM780L Slim to its range of compact PCs. It packs an AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS into a 0.77-litre chassis measuring 130 x 126 x 47.2mm and weighing 0.6kg, aimed at anyone who wants a small, quiet desktop for everyday work, light photo editing and multi-screen setups.
Processor and memory
The Ryzen 7 7840HS is an eight-core, 16-thread chip with a 3.8GHz base clock and a maximum of 5.1GHz, paired with AMD Radeon 780M integrated graphics. It’s not the latest generation, but it remains a capable processor for Lightroom and general creative work.
Memory is LPDDR5X-7500, available in 16GB or 32GB configurations. This memory is soldered to the board, so it can’t be upgraded later – it’s worth choosing carefully at the point of purchase, particularly for photo editing, where 32GB gives more headroom.
Storage and connectivity
Storage is more flexible, with two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 slots. Configurations ship with a 500GB or 1TB SSD.
Ports include a 40Gbps USB4 port with DisplayPort Alt Mode and power delivery, two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A ports, two USB 2.0 Type-A ports, HDMI, DisplayPort, 2.5G Ethernet and two 3.5mm audio jacks. Wireless connectivity is Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.
The UM780L Slim can drive up to three independent displays: 4K at 60Hz over HDMI, 4K at 120Hz over DisplayPort, and up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz over USB4. It ships with Windows 11 pre-installed.
Our take
The UM780L Slim isn’t in the same league as the AI mini PCs based on AMD’s Ryzen AI Max chips, but it’s a far more affordable option. For photographers who want a compact editing machine with a calibrated monitor or two, the USB4 port and triple-display support are useful, though the soldered memory means the 32GB model is the one we’d recommend.
