Skylum is dropping the “Neo”. The company has confirmed that Luminar Neo is being renamed simply Luminar, alongside a substantial interface overhaul that is available to all users today and a larger release due this autumn, now open for pre-order. Details are on the Skylum website.
The name change is more sensible than it might appear. Luminar Neo arrived in 2022 as the successor to Luminar AI, which itself replaced Luminar 4, and the resulting naming has done the software no favours — particularly for anyone searching for tutorials or trying to work out which version they actually own. Reverting to plain Luminar removes a layer of confusion.
The interface upgrade is the part existing users will notice immediately. Luminar’s editing tools have generally been well regarded, particularly its AI-driven sky replacement, relighting and generative features, but the interface has drawn criticism for being slower and less predictable than rivals. A serious rework is arguably more valuable to day-to-day users than another headline AI feature.
Skylum is also taking pre-orders for the autumn release, though full details of what it contains have yet to be published. We would suggest the usual caution about pre-ordering software on the strength of a roadmap rather than a feature list — particularly given that Luminar’s periodic paid upgrades have been a recurring point of friction with its user base.
Luminar occupies an interesting position in the market: cheaper and more approachable than Lightroom or Capture One, with a stronger emphasis on one-click AI edits than either. For photographers who want a good result quickly rather than complete manual control, it has always made a reasonable case, and a cleaner interface plus a simpler name should help it.
