Nikon Confirms A Fast Telephoto Zoom With Built-In Teleconverter

Nikon has announced the development of the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S, and this already looks like one of those lenses that professional sports and action photographers will want to keep a very close eye on.

The new lens is being developed for Nikon Z mount full-frame/FX-format mirrorless cameras, and its headline feature is a built-in 1.4x teleconverter. In normal use, it covers 120-300mm, but with the teleconverter engaged it extends to 420mm, giving photographers a much longer reach without needing to remove the lens or add an external converter in the field. Nikon’s official UK announcement describes it as a pro-level full-frame zoom with S-Line optics, built-in Vibration Reduction and a 1.4x teleconverter.

That combination is especially interesting for sport, press, wildlife and event photographers. A 120-300mm f/2.8 zoom is already a versatile tool for covering subjects that move quickly and unpredictably, but the extra reach to 420mm makes the lens more flexible when photographers are working from fixed positions, touchlines, pits, courtsides or press areas. I can see this being particularly useful where swapping lenses is either too slow, too risky in bad weather, or simply impractical during live action.

As part of Nikon’s S-Line, the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S is being positioned within the company’s premium Z lens family. Nikon says the lens will offer “superior optical performance and mobility” for professional imaging in sports photography and other genres.

The development announcement is light on final technical detail, which is normal at this stage. Nikon has not yet confirmed the optical construction, minimum focus distance, weight, dimensions, filter size, control layout or autofocus specifications. However, Nikon USA’s development page lists the key features as a full-frame constant f/2.8 zoom, a 120-420mm range enabled by the built-in 1.4x teleconverter, premium S-Line optics and suitability for sports photography and more.

There is also one important caveat: Nikon notes that the appearance of the actual product may differ from the image shown in the development announcement. So, while the concept is now official, the final production version may still change before launch.
