Nikon has officially announced the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II, the next-generation standard zoom lens for its Z-mount mirrorless system, aimed squarely at professional and high-end enthusiasts. Revealed globally on 22 August 2025, the updated lens brings a wealth of enhancements over its predecessor, making it one of the most compelling options in its category.
Most notably, this is the world’s first professional 24-70mm f/2.8 lens to feature an internal zoom mechanism. Unlike traditional zoom lenses that extend and retract as focal lengths change, the new design keeps the barrel length constant and maintains a consistent centre of gravity. This is a major benefit for handheld shooting and an even bigger win for video users working with gimbals and rigs, as rebalancing is no longer required mid-shoot.

Another key update is Nikon’s introduction of the Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor (SSVCM) in a Z-series zoom for the first time. This new autofocus system offers five times faster performance than before, is 50% quieter, and significantly improves focus tracking during zooming. The optical formula has also been reworked, reducing the number of elements but increasing image sharpness and clarity thanks to Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings that cut down on flare and ghosting.
At just 675 grams, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II is also the lightest lens in its class. Combined with robust weather sealing, a rounded 11-blade aperture for smoother bokeh, and close focusing distances (0.24 m at 24mm and 0.33 m at 70mm), it’s built for the rigours of both fieldwork and studio use. Nikon has also added a de-clickable control ring and a new HB-117 lens hood with a filter adjustment window—ideal for videographers using variable ND filters.
As Nikon celebrates seven years of the Z system and nearly a century of optical engineering, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II marks a significant step forward, offering a lighter, sharper, and more versatile tool for modern creatives.
