Compact full-frame camera brings cinematic tools to creators

News

Sony has announced the latest addition to its Cinema Line series with the launch of the Sony FX2 (model ILME-FX2), a compact full-frame camera designed for content creators, indie filmmakers, and small crews seeking cinematic results in a portable form. Positioned as an accessible gateway into Sony’s professional Cinema Line ecosystem, the FX2 promises cinematic quality, practical usability, and enhanced creative control.

Building on the popular FX3 and FX30, the new FX2 delivers the signature Sony look and feel while adding fresh capabilities. Chief among these is a high-resolution 33MP Exmor R™ back-illuminated CMOS sensor, which supports still photography alongside 4K video capture. It offers up to 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, capturing nuanced details in shadows and highlights. With Dual Base ISO settings of 800 and 4000, the camera is highly capable in low-light conditions, with maximum ISO reaching 102400.

Sony’s commitment to versatility is apparent in the FX2’s broad range of recording formats, including 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra, and up to 4K at 60fps or Full HD at 120fps for slow-motion shots. Cinematographers can use the Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, or Flexible ISO modes, and upload up to 16 custom LUTs for accurate in-camera colour monitoring. The FX2 also supports anamorphic lenses with 1.3x and 2.0x desqueeze options.

A standout feature is the new tiltable 3.68-million-dot electronic viewfinder, complete with a deep eyepiece tailored for video production. Complementing this is a 3-inch vari-angle touchscreen for flexible framing. Measuring just 129.7 x 77.8 x 103.7 mm and weighing around 679 grams, the FX2 is ideal for solo operators or mobile shoots. The optional handle includes two XLR/TRS inputs, enabling 4-channel, 24-bit audio recording.

Autofocus has been upgraded with Real-time Recognition AF, capable of detecting humans, animals, vehicles, and more. Users also benefit from new stabilisation modes—Active and Dynamic Active—for smoother handheld footage. Meanwhile, features like Auto Framing and Framing Stabiliser mimic the precision of a second operator, even during static tripod shots.

Sony has also included robust stills support with a new ‘Log shooting’ mode for 33MP RAW photos, aimed at creators who need to colour grade in post. The MOVIE/STILL mode switch and context-sensitive menus streamline transitions between video and photo workflows.

Connectivity includes HDMI Type-A with 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit output, 16-bit RAW support, dual-band Wi-Fi, wired LAN compatibility, and 10Gbps USB-C for fast data transfer. It’s also ready for live streaming and remote production out of the box.

In line with Sony’s Road to Zero environmental plan, the FX2 is produced in factories powered by renewable energy. It also features improved accessibility options, such as a Screen Reader and Display Magnification, supporting creators of all abilities.
