Sony has announced the Xperia PRO-I, price tag £1,599, its latest flagship smartphone which boasts a 1-inch image sensor and phase detection AF system.
The first smartphone to boast phase detection autofocus and a image sensor this size, the new Sony Xperia PRO-I features a 1.0-type Exmore RS sensor which is the same one used in the Sony RX100 VII. Sony says it has optimised the sensor of smartphone use.
The Xperia PRO-I’s 315 phase detection AF points cover 90% of the frame, and users have advanced AF modes in Sony’s Real-time Eye AF and Real-time tracking. These advanced AF modes are also available when shooting video.
As for video, the Sony Xperia PRO-I can shoot 4K video at 120fps, and it also records 360 audio. There are two video modes, Videography Pro and Cinematography Pro – the former for vlogging and single-location videos and the latter for more professional work.
Powering the Xperia PRO-I is Sony’s Bionz X image processor, which helps it produce noise-free images in low light and power its 20fps burst shooting.
Other features include a built-in strap hole and dedicated shutter button, a 3.5mm audio jack and a new vlog monitor accessory, sold separately, for self-shooting.
The Leitz camera beat this Sony to market with a 1-inch sensor in June.
