Sony has officially announced the FE 50-150mm F2 GM, the world’s first telephoto zoom lens to feature a 150mm maximum focal length paired with a constant F2 aperture. Designed for professionals working across photography and video, the new lens extends Sony’s premium G Master lineup with a powerful tool built to deliver prime-like sharpness, cinematic results, and high-speed performance.
Targeted at portrait, wedding, indoor sports, and video creators, the FE 50-150mm F2 GM is positioned as an all-in-one alternative to multiple primes—covering focal lengths traditionally served by 50mm, 85mm, and 135mm lenses. Its consistent F2 aperture across the zoom range enables both excellent low-light performance and striking bokeh, making it especially well-suited for subject isolation and visual storytelling.
The lens features a high-end optical design incorporating two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, three ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, and two Super ED elements. These work together to minimise chromatic aberration and distortion, while Sony’s Nano AR Coating II helps suppress flare and ghosting. The result is exceptional contrast and clarity, even in challenging lighting conditions. Close-up performance is also impressive, with a minimum focus distance of 0.4 metres and a 0.20x maximum magnification.
Physically, the FE 50-150mm F2 GM is relatively compact for its class, measuring approximately 200mm in length and weighing about 1,340g. Thanks to its internal zoom design, the lens maintains its size and centre of gravity throughout the zoom range, which is a major benefit when used on gimbals or rigs for video production.
Autofocus is driven by four XD linear motors, offering quiet, fast and accurate focus tracking—even during 120fps continuous shooting with AF/AE on compatible Sony bodies like the Alpha 9 III. Focus breathing is minimised, and the lens supports Sony’s Breathing Compensation feature for smooth focus transitions in video. Linear Response MF provides intuitive manual control for precision focussing.
With a rugged build, dust and moisture resistance, and a fluorine-coated front element for easy cleaning, the lens is clearly designed for real-world professional use. Its blend of performance, reliability and compact form factor gives it wide appeal for hybrid shooters who demand excellence in both stills and motion capture.
