Our Verdict

UHS-II V90 SD and MicroSD cards provide transfer speeds that maximise the SD format’s greatest performance. However, while there are plenty of cameras that maximise the speed, there are few card readers designed to keep up with the pace. Now, however, there is the SABRENT USB Type-C SD/MicroSD UHS-II Card reader that incorporates the latest technology to help keep up with the action.

This card reader is faster than most and features a metal design that gives it both a stylish and ultra-tough look.

This card reader works faultlessly, transferring files from the latest SD cards with speeds that will help to speed up workflows. Thankfully this card reader is also fully backward compatible and can be used with UHS-I cards.

Compared with run-of-the-mill SD card readers, the price is steep, but then here you are paying for performance and quality. Considering that boost in performance, the SABRENT USB Type-C SD/MicroSD UHS-II Card reader seems exceptionally good.

What is the SABRENT USB Type-C SD/MicroSD UHS-II Card reader?

The SABRENT USB Type-C SD/MicroSD UHS-II Card reader has been designed to keep up with the transfer rates of the latest SD and MicroSD cards. It differs from most other SD Card readers because it fully maximises the USB Type-C interface, which means it can transfer files at speeds up to 312MB/s. That speed is faster than many of today’s fastest V90 cards, including those from Sabrent.

The SABRENT USB Type-C SD/MicroSD UHS-II Card reader also stands out for its robust metal and plastic build quality. This is one of the highest quality SD Card readers I have come across while remaining beautifully and compact.

Specification

Performance

The card reader boasts impressive transfer speeds that match the theoretical rates of the UHS-II card format.

The results were instantly impressive, popping in a Sabrent UHS-II card. Using the Rocket V90 SD UHS-II Memory Card that has a stated read and write speed of 280MB/s read, /250MB/s write it achieved a read of 240MB/s and write of 235MB/s, this is not a bad result at all and the fastest I have ever seen from an external SD card reader and even marginally beats the MacBook Pro’s built-in reader.

The reliability of the Type-C connection is also good; downloading 120GB of data to the internal HD took ten and a half minutes, which is excellent.

Ready to post: SABRENT Thunderbolt 3 & USB 3 to CFexpress card reader

The speed of the SABRENT USB Type-C SD/MicroSD UHS-II Card reader is far greater than other SD card readers that I have used and unlocks the full potential of the cards and machines. When dealing with high-resolution image files and video, the faster the transfer rate, the better and this card reader certainly provides.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately it feels like the SD format is coming to the end of its run, and it has had a good innings. Since SD became the format of choice, taking over the mantle from Compact Flash it has remained almost completely unchallenged. Now with CFExpress being widely adopted, it definitely looks like SD’s days are numbered. However, the format does have some time left with many cameras still being produced SD-ready, making this SD card reader a very worthwhile purchase.

Regarding speed, build quality and performance, there is nothing to fault with the SABRENT USB Type-C SD/MicroSD UHS-II Card reader, which is the best SD card reader I have looked at.

If you don’t mind the price, then this is an SD card reader perfection.
