The OBSBOT Tiny 2 Lite is essentially a 4K webcam, so as soon as you plug it into a Mac or PC system, it’s instantly recognized in a plug-and-play fashion and ready for use. To take advantage of all the additional technology and AI tracking features that it contains, you need to install the OBSBOT software. This software essentially runs in the background when needed and enables you to adjust a few of the additional settings. The interface is beautifully designed and incredibly intuitive, with all the options and settings.
First, as a straight webcam, the visual quality is superb, which is a huge leap forward compared with the standard camera that features at least the MacBook Pro 16″. Then, with the ability to kick out the background with a bit of blur and adjust the visual impact of the stream, there are plenty of options for getting the stream from the camera to look well beyond the abilities of the standard camera.
Where this really starts to come into its own is with the tracking. When sat down, you simply select the standard mode, and the movement of the camera is subtle—for those tuning in, seeing a webcam move is something of a novelty. However, where things start to get interesting is as you get out of your seat and start to move. Here, you need to switch the tracking to the motion setting; this stops the camera from jumping around and enables a smooth pan as you move around the room. It has a great effect and can be a powerful tool for keeping an online class engaged through a workshop.
Switching to the other modes and the gesture control have, at present, mixed results. For a time, the camera was quick to respond to the zoom gesture, but in the most recent firmware update, this seems to have rolled back slightly. However, from what I initially used, it does seem like a great feature, and I will update you soon.
Overall, the OBSBOT Tiny 2 Lite brings a little more to the webcam format, and when linked in with stream technology and other cameras, it enables you very quickly to build up an impressive online presence for streaming workshops. Even broken down to the base used as a webcam, the visual quality is outstanding, but the real strength here is the tracking and using multiple cameras to get stunning streaming results.
