What is the Godox Cube-S?

The Godox Cube-SC and Cube-SL are wireless microphone kits available in various configurations. The Cube-SC, which this review primarily focuses on, is designed for Android and iPhones with USB Type-C ports, while the Cube-SL features a Lightning connector for older iPhones. Other than the connector type, the two systems are essentially identical.

Both kits come in single or dual mic options, though based on current pricing, the dual mic version is recommended. The price difference is minimal, making it worth the investment for the added flexibility of recording interviews or simply having a spare mic in case one is misplaced.

Since these systems are designed for mobile phones, aesthetics play an important role. Both the Cube-SC and Cube-SL are available in black or white, offering a sleek, modern look that complements your device while remaining discreet in use.

Build and Handling

All Godox Cube kits follow the same design style, with the only variations being the number of transmitters, the connector type, and the colour. Starting with the semi-hard case, it’s of extremely high quality and holds everything you need for the kit. The case is neatly divided into two sections: a mesh compartment for the charging cable and lanyards, while the lower section holds the charging case, wind jammers, and two magnetic clips.

The clips and wind jammers add excellent value to the set. The clips offer flexibility in how you attach the mics to your subject, whether using the button magnets that clamp the mics to thinner clothing or the small clips for thicker attire. The wind jammers are particularly useful for outdoor shoots, with their silicone fittings easily sliding over the mics to effectively reduce wind noise.

The main components are housed in the charging case, which features a spring-loaded drawer that clicks open to reveal the receiver—either Lightning or USB Type-C, depending on your choice—and the two transmitter mics, all neatly arranged. The design is simple yet functional, and the charging case ensures your units are recharged or kept topped up between sessions.

The receiver is incredibly compact, measuring 39.88 x 26.42 x 8.89mm and weighing just 5g, making it one of the smallest and lightest options available. It plugs directly into the base of your smartphone, where you would usually insert a charger or data cable. The receiver draws power from your phone and springs to life within seconds.

The transmitter mics are small, tile-like units measuring 24.38 x 24.89 x 12.45mm and weighing 7g each, making them barely noticeable in use. Once powered on, they automatically pair with the receiver, ready for instant recording.

The options for audio control are limited but straightforward. A quick press of the button on the receiver or transmitter mics toggles the Denoise feature on or off. Additionally, the button on the transmitter mics can be double-pressed to start and stop recording or even take a photo using your phone’s standard camera apps, adding a touch of versatility to this budget-friendly kit.

Features

The number of features packed into this new generation of wireless mics is remarkable and a while. While thebe-SC is designed as a simple wireless mic system for mobile phones, its feature set is no less impressive.
Like most wireless mics of its kind, the Cube-SC operates on a 2.4GHz wireless connection, allowing it to transmit audio over a distance of up to 300m with a clear line of sight. The audio is recorded at 48Hz 24-bit, offering plenty of scope for adjustments in post-production. Additionally, the system includes its own Denoise feature, which can be activated from either the transmitter or receiver, ensuring a cleaner sound.

One standout feature of the Cube-SC is its compact size. The charging case easily fits into a trouser or bag pocket without adding any noticeable weight or bulk, making it ideal for mobile creators. Even more impressive and currently unique is the Apple Find My app integration. This feature allows you to locate the Cube-SC if it’s ever misplaced—a thoughtful addition, especially considering the system’s ultra-portable design.

When it comes to audio quality, the Cube-SC sets itself apart. Recording at  48Hz 24-bit  with a > 70 dB SNR, a  Max. 115dB SPL and an 86dB dynamic range, it captures a wide range of sounds, from whispers to loud performances, with clarity and minimal distortion.

A handy feature is the double-click recording option on the wireless transmitters. Simply double-click the small button on the base of the unit, and your phone’s native camera app will start or stop recording, eliminating the need to touch the phone itself—an ideal feature for reducing post-editing time.

The Cube-SC is also built for extended use. With a 10-hour battery life per unit, the charging case provides two full top-ups, giving you up to 30 hours of use—perfect for a day’s shoot or even for documenting your travels.
The Godox Mic App enhances the system even further. Through the app, you gain access to features like real-time monitoring, input volume adjustments, dual-mode DNR, instant speaker playback, and quick firmware updates, making it a comprehensive audio solution for mobile users.

Performance

After an initial charge through the USB connection on the side of the charging case, the Godox Cube-SC units are ready to go. Getting started took a lot of work. A quick push on the end of the case releases the spring-loaded drawer, revealing the mics and receiver neatly laid out inside.

Plugging the receiver into the phone’s base triggers the green lights on the receiver, indicating that it’s powered on. The two transmitter mics inside the case glow blue, showing they’re charged and ready. Once removed, the lights switch from blue to flashing green, turning solid once they’ve connected to the receiver. At this point, you’re ready to start recording. In this test, I connected to an iPhone 15 Pro and used the Godox Mic App to monitor the units’ status.

Compared to other wireless mic systems, the Cube-SC offers limited control options. You can adjust the input volume, toggle the Denoise between off, gentle, and intense, and switch the loudspeaker on or off.

When recording using the Cinematic option in the iPhone’s default camera app, the audio quality is instantly impressive. Considering the simplicity of the system, the boost in audio clarity is significant. The noise reduction options work well, avoiding the digitised sound common in other budget mic systems. Overall, the quality of both the manufacturing and audio pickups is surprisingly good, especially considering the affordable price point.

Final Thoughts

I’m genuinely surprised by just how good and useful these Godox Cube-SC mics are. At the current price, they’re an absolute must if you use your mobile phone to record audio. Their compact size, lightweight build, and ease of use, combined with the impressive audio quality, make them an excellent option for mobile creators.

While the feature set is a bit limited compared to some other systems, and the controls through the Godox Mic App are minimal, there’s still enough adjustment to keep most users happy. The out-of-the-box performance is so good that, for most people, there’s little need for tweaking.

This set is superb as a wireless mic solution for mobile phones. Given the balance of price and quality that Godox has achieved here, competitors would certainly have reason to be worried if there was a  3.5 mm jack version.
