Tamron has announced the 12-20mm F2.8 (Model A084), an ultra-wide-angle zoom for full-frame Sony E and Nikon Z mirrorless cameras that holds a constant f/2.8 aperture across its range. The headline is that 12mm wide end: where most ultra-wides start at 14mm or 16mm, Tamron pushes to a genuinely dramatic 12mm, and pairs it with a bright maximum aperture throughout. It’s aimed at landscapes, architecture, interiors, travel and, notably, astrophotography. Full details are on the Tamron product page and in the official press release.
That combination of 12mm reach and a constant f/2.8 is exactly what makes this lens interesting to us. For night skies and dimly lit interiors, the extra stop over the f/4 zooms is meaningful, and the expansive 12mm perspective gives a sense of scale that 14mm simply can’t. Tamron has clearly built with astro in mind: the optical formula uses one XGM and three GM aspherical elements plus one XLD and three LD elements, specifically to tame sagittal coma flare so point light sources stay crisp into the corners.
What impresses on paper is how much control Tamron has packed in without ballooning the size. At around 570g and 119.3mm it stays genuinely portable, yet it carries an aperture ring (a control ring on Nikon Z), a customisable switch and focus-set button, AF/MF and MF-lock switches, a zoom lock, a click on/off toggle for silent aperture in video, and an iris-lock switch on the Sony version. A VXD linear motor handles autofocus, there’s a USB-C port for the Tamron Lens Utility, and a rear filter holder takes cut sheet filters for long exposures. Close focus is a useful 0.18m at the wide end.
This is Tamron doing what it does best: a near-professional specification at a lighter weight than the first-party equivalents, and presumably a friendlier price. The 12-blade diaphragm should also reward stopped-down cityscapes with clean sunstars. It also arrives under Tamron’s new product-naming convention. We’d want to test corner sharpness and coma control in the field before drawing conclusions, but as a spec sheet this is one of the more tempting ultra-wide zooms we’ve seen in a while.
