Four years after its Sony E-mount debut, Tamron’s compact 20-40mm f/2.8 zoom is coming to Nikon Z mount, with the same optics and a 22 October release date.
Tamron is bringing its 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD to Nikon Z-mount full-frame cameras. The lens first launched for Sony E-mount in 2022, where it built a reputation as one of the smallest fast standard zooms around, and Nikon shooters have been waiting a long time for it.
As reported by DPReview, the optical design is unchanged. It uses 12 elements in 11 groups, including four low-dispersion elements, two moulded glass aspherical elements and a hybrid aspherical element, with a nine-blade aperture.
The lens weighs 380g and measures 74.4mm in diameter and 89mm long, with a 67mm filter thread. Focusing is handled by Tamron’s VXD linear motor, and the lens can focus as close as 0.17m at the wide end, giving a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:3.8. It’s also sealed against dust and moisture.
Our take
A 20-40mm range is an unusual choice, giving up the longer end of a standard zoom in exchange for a wider 20mm start and a much smaller, lighter lens. It pairs particularly well with compact Z bodies like the Z5 II, Zf and Z6III, where a 24-70mm f/2.8 can feel front-heavy. For travel, street and vlogging, it’s a really appealing option, and it’s good to see third-party support for Nikon Z continuing to grow.
