When I first reported that the Sony FX5 had slipped from its original August shipping date, it was on the strength of rumour-site sourcing. It’s now firmer than that. Retailer listings have confirmed the delay and pinned down new dates, so if you have an FX5 on pre-order, here’s when you can realistically expect it.
The confirmed dates
According to Sony Alpha Rumors, citing retailer listings, German retailer Foto Erhardt now has the FX5 shipping from 22 October in Europe, while Adorama in the US lists 15 October. That’s a slip of around two months from the original August date the camera launched with, and it lines up with the earlier report that the delay was down to a quality control issue.
The two-week gap between the US and European dates is normal for a Sony launch, so nothing unusual there. What matters is that these are retailer-confirmed shipping dates rather than speculation, which is a firmer footing than we had before.
What it means if you’ve pre-ordered
My advice hasn’t changed: sit tight. A delay for quality control is a great deal better than a camera that ships with a fault, and most retailers taking FX5 pre-orders don’t charge until the camera dispatches, so there’s little cost to waiting. UK dates weren’t specified in the retailer listings I’ve seen, but given Sony UK originally quoted late August for direct orders, a UK slip into late October is the reasonable expectation.
The FX5 remains a significant camera for Sony’s Cinema Line — the first with 3:2 Open Gate capture and internal X-OCN RAW recording — so for anyone who’s committed to one, an extra few weeks for Sony to get it right is worth the wait. We’ll update again if UK-specific dates are confirmed.
