Sony’s compact Cinema Line FX5 has slipped again, with European Sony sites now showing 16 November as the shipping date, almost three months after its originally planned release.
Anyone who pre-ordered the Sony FX5 will have to wait a little longer. As first spotted by Sony Alpha Rumors, Sony’s European websites have moved the camera’s shipping start date to 16 November.
It’s the latest in a series of delays. The FX5 was announced on 22 July, with a Japanese release planned for 21 August and US availability in mid-August. On 18 August, Sony Japan confirmed a postponement without giving a new date, and Sony Europe then listed 16 October. In September, Sony Japan revised its notice to “late October or later”, and the European date has now moved again.
Why the delay?
Sony has only said the delay is due to production-related circumstances. When the camera was announced, Sony Japan also said orders had far exceeded expectations. Other reports have pointed to a possible issue with the rear LCD, but Sony has not confirmed this, so we’d treat it as speculation for now.
Sony Alpha Rumors also notes unconfirmed chatter that shipping may slip as far as January, though it describes this as completely unconfirmed.
Our take
The FX5 is one of the most interesting cameras of the year, bringing a fully stacked full-frame sensor and 16-bit X-OCN recording to a compact Cinema Line body, so it’s no surprise demand has been strong. Repeated slips without a clear explanation are frustrating for filmmakers who have planned productions around it, though, and we’d recommend keeping an eye on your retailer’s listing rather than relying on the original date.
