Docks are usually the least interesting object on a desk — a black box you plug things into and then forget about until something stops working. Pexar’s PexarBolt Ultra takes a different view: it has a five-inch touchscreen on the front showing you exactly what every port is doing. For a photographer whose ingest routine involves cards, drives, a NAS and a laptop all fighting over bandwidth, that is more useful than it sounds. Details are on the official PexarBolt Ultra page.
The card readers are the headline for photographers
Most Thunderbolt docks treat card readers as an afterthought, if they include them at all. The PexarBolt Ultra has CFexpress Type B, SD 4.0 and microSD 4.0 slots built in, which between them cover nearly every camera you are likely to own — mirrorless bodies, cinema cameras, drones and action cameras.
Better still, there is an internal M.2 NVMe SSD slot you populate yourself. That turns the dock into a complete ingest station: card goes in the front, footage lands on an internal drive, and the finished project goes out over 10GbE to your NAS. No hub, no dongles, no chain of bus-powered enclosures falling over halfway through a transfer.
The 10 Gigabit Ethernet deserves particular note. It is the specification we keep flagging as missing from compact editing machines, and having it in the dock means even a laptop with only Thunderbolt can edit from networked storage properly.
Thunderbolt 5, and what the dashboard actually does
The dock runs Thunderbolt 5 at 80Gb/s, rising to 120Gb/s in Bandwidth Boost mode for display-heavy work — that boost being 120Gb/s in one direction and 40Gb/s in the other. It drives dual 8K 60Hz or triple 4K 144Hz displays via Thunderbolt 5, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1, and delivers 140W of PD 3.1 charging to a laptop with a further 45W shared across two front USB-C ports. There are 22 ports in total.
The five-inch dashboard shows real-time port activity, power draw, temperature and bandwidth. Whether that is genuinely useful or simply pleasant depends on how you work — but if you have ever wondered why a transfer is crawling, or whether a bus-powered drive is actually getting enough power, being able to see it beats guessing. Active cooling with a built-in fan and thermal monitoring addresses the other perennial dock complaint: throttling during long transfers.
Worth noting the dashboard requires Pexar’s desktop app for full functionality.
The significant caveat
This is a Kickstarter project that has not launched yet. Pexar lists it as coming soon, with super early bird pricing from $479 against a $649 MSRP.
That matters. Crowdfunded hardware carries real delivery risk, and docks in particular are unforgiving to design — Thunderbolt certification, firmware stability and thermal behaviour are where cheaper docks fall down, often months after shipping. Pexar’s existing products are digital picture frames, so this is a considerable step into more demanding territory.
If it delivers as specified it is a genuinely well-conceived piece of kit for a working photographer, and the card readers alone would save a good deal of desk clutter. We would wait for independent testing before backing it.
