Nikon has announced firmware version 2.00 for the Nikon ZR, its full-frame compact cinema camera. Nikon calls it the first major update since the ZR launched, and says it will be released soon.

RED colour science in H.265

The headline addition is support for Log3G10 gamma when recording in H.265. Log3G10 is RED’s log curve, and until now getting RED colour science out of the ZR has meant shooting in the much larger R3D NE raw format. R3D NE is the raw format Nikon developed with RED Digital Cinema, its subsidiary, to bring RED’s look to Nikon cameras. Being able to record Log3G10 in compact H.265 files should make it far easier to match the ZR with RED cameras on a shoot without filling cards and drives as quickly.

Image and handling tweaks

The update also lets you choose the level of High ISO noise reduction. That gives more control over how footage looks in low light, depending on whether you prefer a cleaner image or want to keep more texture and detail.

More functions can now be assigned to the command dials and function buttons. Nikon says this gives one-press access to key settings and a significant improvement in handling.

Better monitoring

Two changes help with monitoring. Focus peaking is now available when recording R3D NE, and you can apply a 3D LUT to the HDMI output. That means an external monitor or director’s screen can show a graded look while the camera records log.

Our take

These are exactly the sort of features that make a camera easier to use on real productions. Log3G10 in H.265 is the standout. It makes the ZR far more practical as a B camera alongside RED bodies, and as an A camera for smaller productions that want RED’s look without raw workflows. Adding focus peaking in R3D NE and LUTs on HDMI output fills obvious gaps too.

We’ll update this story when Nikon confirms the release date. The firmware will be available from Nikon’s website.
