Godox has released the Knowled AM800R, an 800W full-colour inflatable LED mat light aimed at film, television and commercial production — and its party trick is speed. Where a rigid 4x4ft frame takes time to build, the AM800R simply inflates: its airframe reaches 8 PSI in about a minute, giving you a large, even soft source almost instantly. It’s the more compact sibling to last year’s 4x8ft AM1600R, and brings the same inflatable concept to the 4x4ft size many gaffers consider the workhorse for interviews and mid-sized sets. Full specs on the Godox site.
The 1.2 x 1.2m panel puts out full-colour light across a 1,800K to 10,000K range with ±100 green-magenta adjustment, and supports CCT, HSI, RGBW, GEL, XY and FX modes with a dozen built-in effects. Colour accuracy is rated at around CRI 96 and TLCI 98, so it’s built for professional, colour-critical work rather than casual use.
Godox has clearly thought about the realities of production use. A carbon-fibre backplate supports the flexible PCB to reduce deformation, the airframe fabric is designed to resist scratches, an airframe repair kit is included, and the LED modules themselves are replaceable — all of which should appeal to rental houses. Both the light body and controller carry an IP65 rating, so it’s as happy on a wet location as in the studio, and a foldable U-bracket with 300-degree adjustment plus high-strength D-rings allow truss-free rigging and linking multiple units into larger surfaces. Control runs the full professional gamut: CRMX, DMX/RDM, Ethernet and Bluetooth via the KNOWLED app.
The inflatable airframe is a genuinely smart idea for anyone who values fast setup and flexible mounting on location, and the IP65 rating is a real bonus for outdoor shoots. At $3,990 it’s firmly a professional tool rather than a creator light, but for the soft-source workhorse role it’s designed to fill, it looks a compelling option — and one we’d like to see in action.
