Fujifilm has announced the instax SQUARE 2, a new square-format instant camera, along with instax SQUARE SOFT HAZE, a new film with a softer, dreamier look.

The SQUARE 2 is designed to be simple. Exposure and flash are both automatic, and a twist-to-operate dial selects between three shooting modes. Close-up mode covers 0.3m to 0.5m, Standard covers 0.5m to 3m, and Landscape covers 3m and beyond. A built-in mirror on the front helps with framing selfies.

The new feature is the Mood Filter Switch. Warm adds a subtle golden tone, Cool gives crisp, blue-toned colour, and Off leaves you with the classic instax look. It’s a nice way to change the feel of a set of prints without carrying separate filters, although, as with any instant camera, you’re committed once the shutter fires.

Fujifilm’s spec sheet lists a 65.75mm f/12.6 lens and a programmed electronic shutter from 1/2 to 1/400 sec, with slow sync for low light. The flash fires on every shot, adjusts its output automatically and reaches from 0.3m to 2.2m. Four AA batteries are good for around 30 packs of film. The camera measures 139 x 119.5 x 71mm and weighs 450g with film loaded.

For us the more interesting launch is the film. SOFT HAZE has deliberately reduced saturation and contrast, and Fujifilm describes the look as glowing highlights and warm, diffused shadows. That’s quite a departure from the punchy colour of standard instax film, and it’s clearly aimed at people who want a gentler, more vintage feel straight out of the camera. It comes in 10-exposure packs and works with any instax SQUARE camera, not just the new one.

Square format has always had a special appeal for instant photography, and it’s good to see Fujifilm still developing new film emulsions as well as new cameras. Pairing SOFT HAZE with the Warm mood filter should give an especially soft, nostalgic result, and we’ll be trying that combination when we get our hands on them.
