Freewell has launched an Ultra-Slim Locking Filter System, created in collaboration with the filmmaker and colourist known as Dunna Did It. It went live on 26 August, and the pitch is aimed at a specific and familiar frustration: filter systems that either add too much bulk or fail to stay put. Details are on the Freewell website.

Why “locking” is the interesting word

Magnetic filter systems have largely taken over from screw-in filters over the past few years, and for good reason — swapping an ND during a shoot takes a second rather than thirty. The trade-off has always been security. A purely magnetic filter can be knocked loose, and on a gimbal or a moving rig that is a real risk with expensive glass.

A locking system aims to keep the speed while removing that worry, which is the right problem to solve. The ultra-slim profile matters too: stacking filters on a wide-angle lens is the classic route to vignetting, and every millimetre of thickness brings the corners closer to trouble.

The collaboration angle

Dunna Did It is a working filmmaker and colourist rather than a pure influencer, which is worth noting. Filter systems designed with someone who grades footage for a living tend to get the details right — neutrality across the frame, consistent colour cast between densities, and how the filters behave under a strong key light.

Those are precisely the things that separate a good filter from a cheap one, and precisely what we would test: whether the ND densities are genuinely neutral or introduce a colour shift you then have to correct, and how well the coatings resist flare when a light source is just outside the frame.

Freewell has built a solid reputation with drone and mirrorless filter kits at prices well below the traditional names, so a system developed with a colourist is a logical step up. Full specifications, densities and pricing are on Freewell’s own site.
