Apple’s free pro video app gets a redesign, aperture and shutter priority modes on the iPhone 18 Pro’s new variable-aperture camera, video scopes and clean SDI output.
Apple has released Final Cut Camera 2.4, a major update to its professional filming app for iPhone. It arrives alongside iOS 27 and takes advantage of the iPhone 18 Pro’s variable-aperture Fusion Main camera.
Proper exposure control on iPhone
For the first time, Final Cut Camera users can control aperture on the main camera. The app adds shutter priority and aperture priority modes, which will feel familiar to anyone coming from a mirrorless camera. Being able to set aperture for depth of field, or fix shutter speed for a 180-degree look, is a meaningful step towards the iPhone behaving like a dedicated video camera.
Cinematic mode effects can now be applied to regular video too, including footage recorded in ProRes and Apple Log. The companion Final Cut Pro update lets editors adjust focus points and depth of field after the fact.
A new interface and pro monitoring
The app has been redesigned from the ground up, with quicker access to settings. There are customisable overlays including false colour and clipping indicators, improved focus peaking with adjustable sensitivity, and a new tally light that shows when recording is underway. A two-finger tap clears everything from the viewfinder.
With iOS 27, Final Cut Camera also gains RGB Parade and histogram scopes. For live production, there’s clean SDI output via an HDMI-to-SDI converter, and a genlock offset setting to compensate for latency differences between devices.
Our take
Variable aperture is the change that matters most. Phone video has always relied on ND filters or electronic shutter tricks for exposure, and real aperture control opens up far more natural motion and depth of field. Combined with false colour and scopes, Final Cut Camera is looking increasingly like a serious B-camera tool.
