Boya’s Notra Neo is a $70 AI recorder aimed at students and interviewers

Boya has announced the Notra Neo, an entry-level AI voice recorder aimed squarely at students, and the timing is deliberate — pre-orders opened on 24 August at $69.99 with a full launch on 4 September at IFA 2026. What it is, and what it isn’t

First, a clarification, because Boya’s naming does not help. This is not the NOTRA wireless microphone system we covered in January. The Notra Neo is a small disc that records speech and transcribes it — a note-taking device rather than a production microphone.

It sits below Boya’s flagship Notra as the accessible entry point. The hardware is simplified: 5 metres of pickup range rather than 10, and 8GB of storage rather than 64GB. What is retained is the AI layer — transcription in over 140 languages, speaker identification, summaries and searchable recordings.

Why photographers might care

Two use cases stand out beyond the obvious student one.

If you conduct interviews — for editorial work, documentary research, or simply capturing what a client actually asked for — automatic transcription removes a genuinely tedious job. And the AI Search function is the interesting part: rather than scrubbing through an hour of audio hunting for a quote, you ask it to find the moment and it takes you there.

It also handles phone calls via a built-in bone-conduction sensor that captures both sides of a conversation, and can record through Bluetooth earbuds. For anyone who takes client briefs by phone and then tries to remember the details later, that is a practical fix.

Specifications are sensible for the price: dual MEMS microphones plus a voice capture sensor for 360-degree pickup, AI noise cancellation rated to -30dB, 20 hours of continuous recording from a 1.5-hour charge, and up to 365 days of standby. There is a magnetic attachment and included ring, so it snaps to a phone, a whiteboard or a car mount. Recordings export as audio, transcripts, summaries or mind maps.

Two things to weigh up

First, the subscription model. The device includes a free monthly allowance of transcription minutes that resets each month, with paid Pro and Ultimate tiers unlocking more minutes and more summary templates. Boya is currently upgrading new devices to 600 minutes a month for twelve months, running until the end of 2026. If your usage is occasional, the free tier may well suffice; if you record several hours a week, factor the subscription into the cost.

Second, real-world audio quality. Independent testing of the flagship Notra found it performed adequately in quiet and moderately noisy rooms but struggled in genuinely difficult acoustics, with some transcription errors. The Neo has fewer microphones and less range, so we would set expectations accordingly — a lecture theatre with the device on your desk should be fine; a noisy café interview may not be.

At $69.99 it is priced as an impulse purchase rather than a considered investment, which feels about right. It will not replace a proper field recorder for anything you intend to publish, but as a way of capturing and searching what was said, it looks a sensible bit of kit.
