Adobe has released Photoshop Elements 2027, the latest version of its consumer photo editor, alongside Premiere Elements 2027. As with recent versions, the focus is on AI tools that make complex edits quicker, with Generative Expand, Generative Upscale and a new AI Assistant leading the list.
Elements remains Adobe’s alternative to a Creative Cloud subscription, sold as a one-off purchase rather than a monthly plan.
What’s new
Generative Expand lets you drag the edges of an image outwards and have the software fill in the extra background with matching content, which is useful for changing aspect ratio or giving a tightly framed shot more breathing room.
Generative Upscale increases the size of low-resolution photos while sharpening detail, which should help with old scans and heavily cropped images.
AI Assistant (beta) is a chat-based helper that can find tools, guide you through edits and handle common tasks.
Other additions include new Creative Filters such as Embroidery, Oil Painting and Duotone with adjustable intensity, access to curated third-party AI models alongside Adobe Firefly, and QR code sharing for sending edited photos to a phone. Organisation gets a boost too, with Semantic Search (beta, English only) for finding images by describing them, and improved duplicate detection.
Licensing and generative credits
Photoshop Elements 2027 is sold with a three-year licence. It’s a single payment with no recurring fees, but the licence doesn’t renew and expires after three years, although your media catalogue remains accessible. The software includes 25 generative credits per month for the AI features, with more available through an Adobe Firefly plan.
Our take
Generative Expand and Upscale bring two of Photoshop’s most useful AI tools to a much cheaper package. The three-year licence and monthly credit allowance are worth factoring in, though, as heavy users of the generative features may find they need a Firefly plan on top.
