Panasonic has revealed an extensive new firmware update for its flagship LUMIX S1RII camera, along with updates to key S Series lenses and its companion apps LUMIX Flow and LUMIX Lab. These enhancements aim to bring cutting-edge features from the newly announced LUMIX S1II and S1IIE to the broader LUMIX ecosystem, reaffirming Panasonic’s commitment to supporting creators long after initial purchase.

The LUMIX S1RII firmware update, set to be released free of charge later in 2025, marks a significant step forward in professional-grade functionality. Chief among the improvements is support for 8.1K and 7.2K (3:2) open gate video, with RAW data output over HDMI. Additionally, the update enables the use of ARRI LogC3—available via the DMW-SFU3A software key—for seamless colour matching with ARRI digital cinema cameras.

Videographers will also benefit from HEIF recording in 10-bit 4:2:0 format and proxy file recording during RAW output, which enhances on-set efficiency. Timecode synchronisation via Bluetooth, direct SSD transfers, and broader UVC/UAC device compatibility are also introduced, along with DJI gimbal Bluetooth pairing and HLG View Assist for accurate HDR exposure monitoring.

In terms of usability, the firmware introduces Urban Sports recognition, enhancing autofocus performance for dynamic subjects such as skateboarders and parkour athletes. The update also adds expanded aspect ratio overlays (now 17 in total), support for up to three simultaneous frame markers, and the ability to customise the AF frame colour from a palette of ten options. Users can also repurpose the focus ring as a control ring and reverse its rotation direction in manual focus mode.

Alongside the camera updates, Panasonic is rolling out version 2.0 firmware for three key LUMIX S lenses—the S-X50, S-R24105, and S-R2060. These upgrades mirror the camera’s new control ring functionality, ensuring consistent user experience across the system.

The LUMIX Flow and LUMIX Lab apps also receive key enhancements. LUMIX Flow Version 1.1 introduces compatibility with the new S1II series, shooting assist tools, and a mirroring monitor function to wirelessly transmit live view from USB-connected monitors to other devices. Meanwhile, LUMIX Lab Version 1.5 brings HEIF image editing support, ideal for efficient high-quality post-production.

These updates represent a unified effort by Panasonic to offer a future-proof, creator-focused system that blends innovation with practical workflow enhancements. With broad compatibility across hardware and software, the LUMIX platform continues to evolve as a comprehensive toolset for today’s image-makers.
