Nikon will stop manufacturing cameras in Japan and move its production to Thailand in order to cut costs, according to reports.
The Japanese newspaper Asahi has published an article stating that ongoing financial problems are behind a decision to close Nikon’s factory in Sendai in northern Japan.
The move will happen by the end of 2021, the report states.
Nikon makes its full-frame mirrorless Z6 and Z7 series cameras in Sendai but still manufactures its DSLRs in Sendai. The move will centralise all of its production in Thailand.
However, Nikon has told Asahi that its Sendai factory will still produce components for video.
