London, Nikon has launched an inspiring new short film, ‘Proud Reflections’. The film, a collaboration between Nikon Ambassador Carolyn Mendelsohn and former England Rugby player Heather Fisher, celebrates identity and self-expression through the power of photography.
The eye-opening film follows portrait photographer Carolyn as she explores Heather’s complex identity, translating her incredible story through the lens of her Nikon camera. Viewers join Heather and Carolyn on a mini road trip, revisiting significant places and defining moments from Heather’s past. From losing her hair at age 27 due to alopecia to breaking her back the following year, the film captures the events that have shaped Heather into the remarkable person she is today.
Through portraiture and self-portraiture, Carolyn and Heather articulate facets of Heather’s identity, revealing parts of herself she had not known were there. Using Nikon Z8 and Z9 cameras, Carolyn’s empathetic eye ensures Heather’s story is conveyed with authenticity and emotion.
Julian Harvie, Marketing Director of Nikon Northern Europe, highlights the film’s importance: “This film emphasizes the power we gain from a positive framing of diversity and inclusivity. Through Carolyn and Heather’s collaboration, Nikon showcases the beauty of Heather’s identity in all its forms. Nikon is proud to have invested in this poignant film, reflecting our century-old legacy of empowering visual creativity and our modern mission to inspire.”
Heather Fisher expressed her gratitude for the experience: “Being involved in this film at such a pivotal time in my life and career allowed me to show who I am beyond my sport. The camera became a tool for expressing my individuality. Carolyn’s ability to capture and embellish people’s nuances is extraordinary, and the final shots defined my journey in a way that words alone could not.”
Carolyn Mendelsohn added, “I’m proud to be associated with a brand that pushes boundaries and tells stories in new ways, representing those who don’t always feel heard or seen. Photography goes beyond taking beautiful pictures; it’s about allowing individuals like Heather to control their own stories.”
