DJI Osmo Mobile 6: price, specs, release date revealed

Create stunning professional styled video with your mobile phone

News

DJI are currently on form with a stream of new releases. After last week’s announcement of the DJI Osmo Action 3, this week, we have the hotly anticipated Osmo Mobile 6. The Osmo range of single-handed gimbal stabilisers for mobile phones has revolutionised the vlogging world, bringing silky smooth video footage to the masses. This latest release now adds a new Quick Launch feature and enhances ActiveTrack to assist content creators with self-shot videos.

The latest Osmo mobile features many enhancements and builds on the design changes we saw with the compact Osmo Mobile 5. Alongside the ergonomic enhancements, DJI has also updated the software features and potential of in-app video editing.

In a time where Electronic Image stabilisation (EIS) is prominent, you have to ask if a mechanical system still has a place in the market. While EIS such as DJI’s own RockSteady, is excellent, mechanical image stabilisation still takes the edge, especially when it comes to mobile phones. At the heart of the latest Osmo Mobile 6 is the powerful motorised 3-axis gimbal stabilisation that kicks in to smooth out any wobbles or handheld camera shake. As the stabilisation is being provided by an external device rather than the sensor and processor, there’s no clipping in of the captured image which helps to maximise the image quality.

As ever, the Osmo takes the form of a grip and phone holder that makes this an easy way to handhold your mobile phone in order to capture high-quality video content.

“Whether you’re outdoors camping with the family or at home with a group of friends, everyone wants to explore their creativity and capture the moment uniquely,” said Paul Pan, Senior Product Line Manager at DJI. “A DJI Osmo Mobile stabiliser is the perfect companion to push the limitations of any smartphone camera, and the Osmo Mobile 6 is the best we’ve ever made.”

Unparalleled image stabilisation

In the past mobile gimbal stabilisers have been relatively large and, while incredibly useful, were also a pain to carry with you at all times. Now the Osmo Mobile 6 has arrived, DJI has tried to address the size issue, and the new design sees the device’s physical dimensions small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, which also means it should easily slip into your pocket. The device without the phone weighs in at just over 300g and incorporates the same style of the telescopic pole that appeared on the Osmo Mobile 5.

Lighting fast stabilisation

One of the big new features of the Osmo Mobile 6 is the Quick Launch feature; unfortunately, this is only available for iPhone users at the present time. Using the Quick Launch feature, the Mimo App automatically alerts you to enter the camera view as soon as the phone is attached. This helps speed up the initial setup time enabling you to get shooting quickly.

Enhanced ActiveTrack 5.0

One of the features that stands out for DJI products is ActiveTrack. The latest DJI Osmo Mobile 6 features ActiveTrack 5.0, offers more stable tracking over greater distances, and enables tracking with the front camera on objects that turn to the side or spin.

New easy access Osmo Mobile 6 navigation

A new status panel lets you easily check the battery level and mode you; er in. Tapping the M button enables you to switch between following, Tilt lock, FPV and SpinShot making capturing a variety of shots extremely easy.

Manual focus and zoom

Accessed through the Mimo camera app, the new physical side wheel gives greater cinematic control. Roll the wheel to adjust the focal length enabling you to zoom in and out of your subject, or press to switch to manual focus. This is a nice touch if you want to get creative with your filmmaking.

Having fun with a video

Alongside the straight video stabilisation features, the new Osmo Mobile also adds many features accessible through the Mimo App. These include Timelapse, DynamicZoom, Gesture Control, Panorama and Story Mode.
