Is the consumer camera dead? Manufacturers will tell you no, and sales in some sectors are robust. But photographer Tony Northrup poses the question of whether smartphones have dealt a devastating blow and begins an interesting discussion about what the future holds for consumer cameras.
Northrup argues that consumers are still excited about cameras, but the major camera manufacturers like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Fuji, Olympus and Panasonic ignored the potential of the iPhone and other camera phones for too long, and now they’ve lost the consumer camera mark.
