Canon launch new RF 70-200mm and RF 85mm lenses
News

Adding to the rapidly increasing range of RF lenses, today Canon has announced two new optics: the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM and RF 85mm F1.2L USM.

We’ve already seen two of the trinity of f/2.8L lenses, and now the launch of the Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM completes the trio.

This new Canon RF lens is the smallest and lightest optic to cover the 35mm full-frame sensor from any manufacturer.

The second lens launched by Canon today is the RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS. The 85mm focal length is known as being ideal for portraiture, and this new RF lens has been designed with all the qualities that will help it to excel in this genre.

The new lens follows on from the announcement earlier in the year of the Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM and Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM.

These three are kit bag essentials for any EOS R mount owner and will enable enthusiasts and professionals to capture subjects using a bright f/2.8 aperture and zoom range.

The new lens weighs in at a very slimline 1,070g and measures in at 146mm in length at its shortest. Compared to the EF equivalent that a 28% weight saving and 27% shorter.

This lens will also see new technology, such as support for an electronic floating focus control. This drives the two lens groups individually with Dual Nano USMs.

This cutting-edge design helps to provide a high degree of quietness, power saving and high-speed operation without sacrificing the lens’s size and weight.

The Dual Nano USMs enable the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM to achieves high-precision still image AF and smooth movie AF in combination with the EOS R series Dual Pixel CMOS AF.

Filmmakers will welcome the improvements made in the AF design that help to reduce focus breathing.

5 Stop IS (Image Stabiliser) enables pin-sharp even with slow shutter speeds enabling vastly improved low light performance compared with the present EF lens.

Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS

The perfect partner for the R range cameras this Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM is ideally suited for portraiture.

It combines a large maximum aperture of f/1.2 with a minimum focal distance of 85cm.

As with any lens designed for portraiture the Bokeh effect or background blur is an essential feature. Here Canon has worked hard using a vapour-deposited coating technology that has a high transmittance at the centre and low at the edges to maximise the quality of the bokeh effect.

85mm lenses are a powerful tool in the photographers kit bag for both stills and video. The new 85mm is equally at home in the hands of video content creators.
