Canon has announced the Canon EOS R50, price tag from £789.99, a new entry-level APS-C-sensor mirrorless camera.

Billed as an entry point into Canon’s EOS R system, the EOS R50 sits below the Canon EOS R10 and is effectively the R system equivalent of the Canon EOS M50 Mark II. The new Canon camera is aimed at those creating lifestyle and other content for social media, who may have been using a smartphone and are now looking to make a move up to interchangeable lens cameras.

The Canon EOS R50 uses the same 24.2MP sensor as the EOS R10, as well as Canon’s latest Digic X processor. With the Digic X processing engine, the EOS R50 can achieve frame rates of 15fps with its electronic shutter and 12fps with electronic first curtain.

The EOS R50 also boasts Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with subject detection for people, vehicles and animals; however, it does not include the new horse, plane and train subject detection modes that are included in the Canon EOS R8.

The EOS R50 does, however, feature an in-camera Panorama mode and Creative Bracketing mode, and the LCD also offers a vertical orientation for video.

Video-wise, the Canon EOS R50 can record 4K footage at up to 30p, but the footage is oversampled from 6K, meaning it should be higher quality. In Full HD you can shoot at up to 120p to create slow motion movies, and Canon has included its Movie Digital IS stabilisation.

Other features include a 0.39-inch, 2.36-million-dot OLED EVF, a 2.95-inch, 1.62-million-dot touchscreen LCD. and mic and HDMI ports.

The camera body weighs just 375g and is available in black and white options.
