Canon has officially announced the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV – price tag £3,629/€4899.99 – boasting a new 30.4-megapixel sensor, 7fps shooting, and 4K movie recording.
The long-awaited successor to the Canon 5D Mark III was designed based on feedback from photographers themselves, Canon says, and is the first EOS camera to debut the company’s Dual Pixel RAW file format, which allows photographers to correct the point of sharpness after the image is taken.
The new file format also enables photographers to shift foreground bokeh or reduce image ghosting in post-production.
Inside the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is a new full-frame 30.4-megapixel CMOS sensor, and a native ISO range of 100 to 32,000. This is expandable from ISO 50 up to 102,400. Canon says it has also enhanced its noise processing algorithm to enable clearer images in low light.
The new Canon camera offers a 61-point wide area reticular AF system, with 41 cross-type points over an expanded sensor area. Canon says the EOS 5D Mark IV can focus in low light down to -3 EV when using the viewfinder, or as low as -4 EV in Live View.
Canon says its DIGIC 6+ processing engine allows the EOS 5D Mark IV to shoot 7fps at full resolution with full AF / AE tracking. You can capture up to 21 raw images or unlimited JPEGs in a single burst. And for wildlife photographers, it also offers ‘Silent Continuous’ and ‘Silent Single’ shooting modes.
The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV also offers internal 4K movie recording (4096 x 2160) at 30/25/24fps shooting. This allows photographers to extract 8.8MP JPEG images from their videos. The new Canon camera also supports 120p HD video, and offers time-lapse and HDR movie modes.
The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV also enables photographers to use extenders with all telephoto lenses for f/8 AF with all 61 points, including 21 cross-type points.
On the back of the camera, a 3.2in LCD screen offers touch operation. The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV also comes equipped with built-in Wi-Fi and GPS functionality, as well as ftp file transfer via the Canon Camera Connect app.
