Canon EOS R5 announced: 8K video, IBIS, 20fps

There are still gaps in the specs and no official Canon EOS R5 price tag has been announced, but already it is shaping up to be a compelling camera

Update: There’s no doubt that the Canon EOS R5 has been met with overwhelming excitement from the industry. However, in an unusual move, Canon has this morning released a new Press Release confirming more details on the cameras and it’s capabilities.

Canon now confirms that the EOS R5 will be able to shoot 8K video at 30p internally using the full width of the sensor. While that resolution video will be processor-intensive all 8K video modes will support Dual Pixel CMOS AF.

Since Canon and Nikon joined the mirrorless party, the battle for the top has been heating up. Following the success of the Canon EOS R and RP comes the development announcement of the Canon EOS R5.

Richard Shepherd, Pro Product Marketing Senior Manager, said: “We’ve seen speculation that the EOS R5’s specs are ‘impossible’. Today’s announcement confirms once again, we are achieving the ‘impossible’ in order to support our customers’ need for a camera that delivers exceptional image quality and video capture. “

“As an industry leader, we are challenging the market with this launch and showing what’s possible with our technology. The EOS R5 and the RF lens system is proof of our commitment to redefine mirrorless and shows Canon’s unparalleled strength in creating products with true purpose.”

Canon also confirms the following features and specification of the Canon EOS R5.

  • 12fps mechanical shutter
  • Newly developed in-camera image stabilisation that works with the lens stabilisation system
  • Automatic file transfer from the EOS R5 to the image.canon cloud platform
  • Dual card slots
  • 8K at 30fps

As well as the confirmation of specifications we’ve also seen more images of the camera.

This new camera not only challenges everything that has come before but could see Canon back on top when it comes to innovation and desirability.

The Canon EOS R5 has gone all out when it comes to features, most notably 8K video and market-leading image stabilisation.

Many videographers have switched from Canon to other manufacturers due to the limitations of its previous mirrorless cameras. Still, no other camera manufacturer’s bodies have the look and feel of Canon footage.

To see a Canon camera back in the arena with these features is really exciting, if daunting, knowing that a workstation update will also be required to edit that 8K video.

8K at 30fps was confirmed on the 13th of March, however, Canon are still to give details as to whether the camera will be able to shoot 4K at up to 120fps.

Video is, of course, half the story; this is, after all, still a stills camera.

Fast and first-class image capture

With this release, Canon is reaffirming its commitment to the full-frame mirrorless market and the R range of cameras.

The Canon EOS R5 offers high performance that many enthusiasts and pros are looking for with 12fps shooting using the mechanical shutter and an unbelievable 20fps using the electronic shutter.

Canon is also promising that its new image stabilisation system is far superior to anything that has come before.

Canon is suggesting that users can ‘film or shoot without a tripod’ and still achieve your sharpest results. Which is a bold claim. If previous rumours are correct, the Canon EOS R5 will be capable of 5 stops with IBIS alone, and 7-8 stops of correction when used with in-lens stabilisation.

Could it be as good as GoPro’s HyperSmooth? We’ll have to wait and see.

Connectivity

The Canon EOS R5 will have built-in WiFi, though we don’t yet know if it will be 5GHz WiFi as previously rumoured.

The Canon EOS R5 will also support automatic transfer of image files from the device to Canon’s new image.canon cloud platform. This automatic image transfer makes it easy for people to view their content on other devices when on-the-go. Users can shoot and edit when travelling.

What’s more, the EOS R5 also features dual card slots.

Canon EOS R5 Price & Release Date

UPDATE: since publishing this development announcement, we have some new information about a Canon EOS R5 price tag.

Canon’s announcement today was just to reveal the camera’s development, so no official Canon EOS R5 price tag has been revealed. The Canon R5’s price is also further clouded by the fact we also don’t know the resolution of its sensor, among some other gaps in the specs that were announced today.

However, we can probably make a good guess at what the Canon R5 price tag will be based on other cameras in Canon’s range and some rumoured specs from previous months.

Recent rumours suggested the Canon EOS R5 will feature a 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor. These same rumours predicted the camera would also feature IBIS and be capable of recording 8K video, both of which were confirmed in today’s development announcement. So a 45-megapixel sensor is looking likely.

This would compete against Nikon’s 45-megapixel Z7, which is priced about £2,500/$2,500. We expect the Canon EOS R5 price tag will come in similarly around the £2,500/$2,500 mark, or possibly a little bit higher given it is Canon’s flagship full-frame mirrorless camera and the EOS R beneath it is priced £2,300/$2,300.

As for availability, we expect to see a Canon EOS R5 release date somewhere around early summer.

Canon EOS R5 lenses

Canon has also announced the launch of the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM – the latest lens to join Canon’s RF line-up for the EOS R System.

Canon is developing a total of nine RF lenses that are scheduled for release in 2020, including the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM and compatible Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.

What Canon is saying…

Richard Shepherd, Pro Product Marketing Senior Manager, said: “We’re confident that the EOS R5 will shake up the global mirrorless market and we’re excited to see the content photographers and filmmakers will be able to capture with this outstanding new device in their hands.

“This camera highlights our commitment to mirrorless and the need to futureproof photography and filmmaking. We launched the innovative EOS R System in September 2018 with an array of RF lenses and the EOS R, soon followed by more RF lenses, the EOS RP and EOS Ra. The EOS R5 will become the new flagship Canon mirrorless camera, delivering exceptional image quality and video capture.”
