Canon has announced a free firmware update for three of its Cinema EOS cameras: the EOS C400, EOS C80 and EOS C50. It adds new broadcast and virtual production tools, more autofocus options for slow motion and more ways to customise controls. The C50 also gains support for Canon Speedlite flashguns.
Canon says the update has been shaped by customer feedback, and it will be available to download free from Canon Europe’s support site from December 2026.
Broadcast and virtual production
All three cameras get Multi-Matrix support, which gives finer control over colour and saturation on selected colour axes. That makes it easier to match several cameras on a multi-camera shoot, and to work with LED volumes in virtual production.
Other additions for professional workflows include improved CV metadata for focus and zoom encoder data, and Black Level adjustment when shooting in Canon Log 2 or Canon Log 3. Image stabilisation now works with lenses longer than 1000mm, and audio output is now available in Slow & Fast mode. Canon says that last one will help sports crews who move between high-speed footage and post-match interviews.
More autofocus for slow motion
On the EOS C400 and EOS C80, autofocus in Slow & Fast mode now works at more frame rates between 60p and 120p, including 72p, 75p, 90p and 96p. On-screen information has also been improved, with Base ISO and fan indicators.
Speedlite support for the EOS C50
The most interesting change for hybrid shooters is on the EOS C50, which can now use compatible Canon Speedlites through its Multi-Function Accessory Shoe. Canon’s EL-series and EX-series Speedlites, Macro Lights and Speedlite Transmitters are supported. Older five-pin Speedlites need the Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1, which Canon says keeps the camera’s dust and water resistance intact.
That’s a real boost for wedding and event shooters who use the C50 for video and want to grab flash-lit stills of the same moments without swapping bodies.
More custom controls
Across all three cameras, more functions can now be assigned to RF lens buttons, control dials and assignable buttons. These include autofocus, digital tele-converter, sensor mode and exposure settings.
Our take
This is a solid, practical update. Multi-Matrix and better metadata will matter most to broadcast and virtual production users. For a lot of our readers, though, the headline is the C50 gaining Speedlite support, which makes it a far more convincing hybrid camera for event work.
