Skylum has launched Luminar on Web, a browser-based version of its Luminar photo editor. It brings RAW editing and many of the desktop app’s AI tools to any device with a web browser.

Most browser editors so far have stuck to basic adjustments, templates and filters. Skylum is aiming higher. Luminar on Web handles RAW files, includes Skylum’s Light Depth technology for shaping light and adding depth to a scene, and offers both Presets and LUTs. The AI toolset covers GenErase for removing unwanted objects, Photo Restoration for old or damaged pictures, and the Sky, Structure, Body and Bokeh tools.

Because the editing runs in the browser, Skylum says you can work on high-resolution and RAW files without powerful hardware, a long install or filling up local storage. Edits sync across devices and draw on a shared Prime asset library.

Skylum is pitching it at beginners who want more than filters and at experienced photographers who want to edit away from their main computer. The company also says it makes Luminar the only photo editor with a lifetime licence covering desktop, mobile and web.

There are some early limitations. In its hands-on, Fstoppers found you can’t yet open an existing desktop Luminar catalogue, so images have to be imported from a card, USB drive or online storage. It also found you’re limited to Skylum’s own sample skies for replacements for now.

We like the idea of a capable editor in a browser tab, particularly for teaching. Many of our students work across college machines, home laptops and tablets, and anything that removes install and hardware hurdles is welcome. We’ll be trying it with RAW files from a range of cameras to see how it copes.
