vivo has announced the V80, the latest in its photography-led V series. It pairs a 50MP ZEISS Super Telephoto Camera with a new ZEISS 100mm Center-Stage Portrait mode, puts 4K 60fps video on both the front and rear cameras, and fits a 7,200mAh battery into a body that’s just 7.69mm thick.

For us the headline is the telephoto. It uses a 1/1.95-inch Sony IMX882 sensor behind a 3x optical zoom with optical image stabilisation, and goes up to 10x digitally. vivo has built its portrait modes around it. ZEISS 100mm Center-Stage Portrait is the tight option, with what vivo calls ZEISS Planar Style Bokeh and a soft, low-saturation ‘platinum’ tone. The idea is that the longer focal length crops out passers-by and keeps attention on the subject. ZEISS 85mm Portrait gives a looser three-quarter-length framing with Sonnar Style Bokeh.

There’s also a CCD Flash Portrait mode. It uses the flash and a CCD-inspired rendering to separate faces from darker backgrounds at night. It’s a nod to the early-2000s compact look that’s become so popular with younger shooters.

The main camera is a 50MP ZEISS unit with a 1/1.56-inch Sony LYTIA 700V sensor and OIS. Around the front is a 50MP ZEISS Group Selfie Camera with autofocus and a wide-angle lens. vivo’s spec page also lists an 8MP ultra-wide on the back.

The software side brings the usual AI tools: AI Erase, AI Magic Move, AI Image Expander and AI Best Face, which picks a better expression from the frames of a Live Photo. A new AI Creative Camera adds Glow, Sunlight or Top Lighting effects before you shoot, and you can change them later in Albums.

The design is built around what vivo calls Flagship One-Piece Cold-Carved Glass. The back and camera surround are cut from a single piece of glass, which vivo says is stronger than conventional hot-bent glass. It’s rated IP68 and IP69. The front glass was co-developed with SCHOTT, and the phone has SGS drop-resistance certification.

Inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7-series chip (listed as the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 on vivo’s spec page), 8GB of RAM and a 1.5K 144Hz display with 5,000 nits local peak brightness. 90W FlashCharge takes the battery to 50% in 30 minutes. The phone runs OriginOS 7 with six years of security updates.

The bigger picture is that ZEISS-branded portrait modes, once reserved for vivo’s X-series flagships, are now trickling down into its mid-range phones. A dedicated 3x telephoto with a decent-sized sensor at this level is a real draw for anyone who mostly shoots people.
