Sigma’s 18.8x all-in-one APS-C superzoom arrives for Nikon Z, becoming the company’s first zoom for the mount, priced at £599.
Sigma has announced that its 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS | Contemporary is coming to Nikon Z mount. The lens is produced under licence from Nikon, and it’s the first zoom Sigma has made for the system, joining its existing APS-C primes for Nikon Z.
The 16-300mm is already available in Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon RF and L-Mount, and its headline feature is that 18.8x zoom range, which Sigma says is a world first for an APS-C mirrorless autofocus lens. On a Nikon Z APS-C body such as the Z50II or Zfc, it gives an equivalent focal range of roughly 24-450mm, taking you from wide landscapes and interiors right through to wildlife and sport without changing lenses.
For Nikon APS-C shooters this is a significant addition. Native superzoom options for the DX Z bodies have been limited, so a lens that covers almost everything in one 630g package should appeal to travel photographers and anyone who wants a single walkaround lens.
It’s also surprisingly capable up close. Maximum magnification is 1:2 at 70mm, with 1:3 at the wide end and 1:4 at the telephoto end, and the minimum focusing distance is just 17cm at 16mm. That makes it a genuinely useful option for flowers, insects and product detail shots too.
Optical construction is 20 elements in 14 groups, including one FLD, four SLD and four aspherical elements. Sigma’s OS2 optical stabilisation provides up to 6 stops of correction at the wide end and 4.5 stops at the telephoto end (CIPA standard), which will be essential at 300mm. Autofocus is driven by an HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motor, and the Nikon Z version supports continuous AF (AF-C) and in-camera aberration correction on compatible bodies.
Other features include suppressed focus breathing, which helps for video and focus stacking, a zoom lock switch at the wide end, a rubber-sealed mount, and a dust- and splash-resistant design (though not waterproof) with a water- and oil-repellent front element coating.
