Aperture, the non-profit behind one of photography’s most influential magazines and photobook imprints, has opened its new permanent home in New York. The gallery, bookstore and headquarters opened to the public on 18 September 2026 at 380 Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side, after around two decades in Chelsea.

The new space covers 10,000 square feet over two floors of an 1886 building near 78th Street. It includes flexible exhibition and event space, a venue for artist talks, a smaller gallery for more intimate presentations, a bookstore and Aperture’s offices.

A grey built on the Zone System

The detail that caught our eye comes from the architects. The New York practice LEVENBETTS (Stella Betts and David Leven) designed the space, keeping as much of the original building’s character as possible. As they put it: “We really wanted to keep the markings and the character of the original building.”

For the new elements they added, they created a custom colour called “Aperture Gray”, inspired by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer’s Zone System. The idea is that the new work stays quietly neutral, so the historic building and the photographs on the wall stand out. Anyone who has spent an evening in the darkroom placing shadows in Zone III will appreciate that. It’s a nice nod to the tonal thinking that still underpins good printing, whether on paper or on screen.

The bookstore takes up much of the ground floor. In the architects’ words, it is “really about celebrating the books and the magazine that Aperture does”. Transparency was another priority, with the street-level spaces designed to open Aperture up to passers-by in a way the old Chelsea loft never really could.

The opening exhibition

The inaugural show, Aperture Loves New York, is curated by Aperture’s executive director, Sarah Meister. It’s a celebration of the city through the photographers Aperture has championed. Names include Diane Arbus, Tina Barney, Dawoud Bey, Awol Erizku, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Deana Lawson, Stephen Shore, Coreen Simpson and Carrie Mae Weems.

“Our new home marks an exciting chapter for Aperture,” said Meister. She added that the space reflects the organisation’s “enduring belief in photography as a powerful tool.” Aperture has also announced a season of public programmes for the new building.

Our take

A permanent home matters for an organisation like Aperture. It has spent more than 70 years shaping how photography is published and read. Owning its space gives it the stability to plan exhibitions and events for the long term. For UK readers, New York isn’t exactly a day trip. But if you’re heading over, it’s now an easy stop on a museum day that takes in the American Museum of Natural History just around the corner.
