Hollyland’s Pyro 7 Ultra puts a calibrated monitor and 1km wireless in one unit

On a professional set, the monitor is not a convenience — it is the reference every department trusts. Hollyland’s new Pyro 7 Ultra combines that reference with the wireless transmission that normally requires separate hardware, and does it with genuine broadcast colour credentials. Calibrated out of the box

The display is the reason to take this seriously. It is a QD-LCD panel, Calman pre-calibrated to Delta E under 1.5, covering 99% of Rec.709 and 95% of DCI-P3 at Gamma 2.4, with up to 1,500 nits of brightness.

Delta E under 1.5 out of the box matters because most on-set monitors are not calibrated at all, and a monitor that lies to you is worse than no monitor. Jay Sun, Product Manager at Hollyland, makes the point directly: even minor colour differences affect decisions on set and create problems later in post-production. That is precisely right — a director approving a shot on a monitor that is pushing magenta is approving something that does not exist.

The 1,500 nits is the other number that counts. Most 7-inch field monitors sit around 1,000 nits or below, and outdoors in daylight that is the difference between judging an image and squinting at a reflection.

Usefully, it can be recalibrated later using Hollyland’s own Color Calibrator without a PC or third-party hardware — monitors drift with age, and a recalibration route that does not involve sending kit away is a genuine practical advantage.

Wireless without the extra box

The integration is the other half of the argument. Normally a wireless monitoring setup means a monitor plus a separate receiver, with the cabling and mounting that implies. The Pyro 7 Ultra puts both in one unit.

It uses Hollyland’s Twin-WiFi technology, running two wireless bands simultaneously for a dual-path connection with automatic frequency hopping — which addresses the real-world problem of congested RF on a busy set or location. Range reaches up to 1km with latency as low as 20ms in Focus Mode, and it handles 4K60 from a single transmitter to an unlimited number of receivers.

That last point is the one that will interest larger productions. Director, DIT, focus puller and client village can all monitor from one transmitter without additional licensing or hardware per position.

HDMI and SDI both support loop-through and cross-output, and there is camera control over shutter, aperture, ISO and white balance for selected Sony, Canon, Nikon and ARRI bodies.

Our take

At $1,399 this sits well below the Teradek and SmallHD combinations that dominate professional sets, and Hollyland has built its reputation on exactly that gap — professional capability at a price independent productions can reach.

The specification we would most want to verify is the latency claim. Twenty milliseconds in Focus Mode is genuinely low, but focus pullers work to fine tolerances and the difference between quoted and actual latency is where wireless systems are made or broken. The 1km range figure will also be a clear-line-of-sight number, as these always are.

Worth noting it runs HollyOS, a new operating system for the range, and slots into Hollyland’s wider Pyro ecosystem alongside existing transmitters, receivers and monitors — which matters if you already own Pyro kit and would rather expand than replace.
