Viltrox has announced a groundbreaking new product for filmmakers and vintage lens enthusiasts: the NexusFocus F1, a high-precision autofocus adapter that transforms manual PL-mount cinema lenses into intelligent, autofocus-capable tools on Sony E-mount cameras. Launched via Kickstarter on January 15th, the NexusFocus F1 is the first adapter of its kind to offer full FIZ (focus, iris, zoom) motor control powered by AI subject recognition and Sony’s phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) system.
This compact yet robust adapter allows creators to integrate legendary cine optics into modern autofocus workflows, opening new creative possibilities for solo shooters, run-and-gun filmmakers, and small crews. By pairing classic manual lenses with Sony’s advanced subject-tracking features, the NexusFocus F1 eliminates the need for external LiDAR systems, making AI autofocus more accessible and efficient in dynamic shooting environments.
Constructed from aluminium alloy and stainless steel, the unit weighs just 262g and features a dust-resistant mount, USB-C power port, and a clear backlit status panel for live system feedback. It mounts discreetly between the lens and camera, enabling seamless communication and motorised control of legacy glass—revitalising classic lenses with the speed and intelligence of modern autofocus.
Setup is simple, thanks to the Bluetooth-enabled NexusFocus mobile app, which offers automatic lens calibration (currently iOS only), custom lens profiles, and full remote control from smartphones or iPads. The system supports both dual-motor and triple-motor configurations, offering full FIZ capability depending on the lens and user needs. A detachable tripod mount is included for additional rigging flexibility.
Available exclusively via the official Kickstarter campaign, the NexusFocus F1 marks a major leap forward in blending traditional optics with modern automation. It’s a game-changer for creators wanting to retain the character of classic PL and CineMod lenses while benefiting from autofocus efficiency, especially in hybrid video/stills or documentary settings.
