Sigma completes its constant-aperture APS-C zoom trio with a compact 50-120mm F2.8 telephoto for Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF, priced at £699.

Sigma has announced the 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS | Contemporary, a fast telephoto zoom for APS-C mirrorless cameras that gives an equivalent focal range of roughly 75-180mm with a constant F2.8 maximum aperture throughout.

The new lens slots in alongside the 10-18mm F2.8 and 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary zooms, and Sigma describes it as completing that constant F2.8 series. Put the three together and APS-C shooters now have an ultra-wide, a standard and a short telephoto zoom, all at F2.8, covering an equivalent of around 15-180mm. For anyone who’s been waiting for a lightweight alternative to full-frame 70-200mm F2.8 kit, this looks like a very appealing option.

What stands out for us is the size. The Sony E and Fujifilm X versions measure 99mm long and weigh just 390g, while the Canon RF version is 97mm long and 410g. That’s remarkably small for a fast telezoom, and it takes compact 55mm filters.

Inside there are 18 elements in 13 groups, including one FLD, three SLD and four aspherical elements, which Sigma says deliver high contrast across the frame. The lens also features an 11-blade rounded diaphragm, which should help produce smooth, rounded out-of-focus highlights for portraits.

Unusually for a Sigma APS-C Contemporary zoom, the 50-120mm includes optical stabilisation. Sigma’s OS2 system offers up to 6.5 stops of correction at the wide end and 4.5 stops at the telephoto end (CIPA standard). Autofocus is driven by an HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) linear motor, and focus breathing has been suppressed, which will be welcome news for video shooters. Close focusing is also handy, at 23cm at the wide end and 55cm at the long end, giving maximum magnification of 1:3 and 1:4.7 respectively.

Sigma has kept the controls minimal, removing the focus mode and OS switches for a cleaner barrel. The lens is dust- and splash-resistant (though not waterproof) and has a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element. As with all Sigma lenses, each unit goes through Sigma’s own MTF measurement before leaving the factory, and a mount conversion service is available.
