DZOFilm has released two accessories aimed at a very practical problem: how to use the lenses you already own on the camera you happen to be shooting with. The Octopus II multi-mount adapter and Marlin 1.4x extender are available now, and details are on the DZOFilm website.
Octopus II: one adapter, four mounts
The Octopus II is a second-generation multi-mount adapter supporting Sony E, Nikon Z, Leica L and Canon RF lenses, across Super35, full-frame and medium format sensors.
That combination is the point. Most adapters solve one mount pairing; owning a set to cover a mixed kit gets expensive and confusing. For a filmmaker who shoots on different bodies for different jobs — or a rental house serving clients who all turn up with different cameras — a single adapter that handles four mounts is a genuine simplification.
The headline improvement over the original is a 7.12% increase in internal space, which sounds like a curiously precise marketing figure but has a real consequence: it improves compatibility with professional cinema lenses, including DZOFilm’s own Arles, Arcana, Vespid and Catta ranges. Cinema glass tends to have deeper rear elements than photographic lenses, and adapters that work fine with a stills lens can foul on a cine one.
Marlin 1.4x: the extender detail that matters
The Marlin 1.4x extender multiplies focal length, which is useful when you need more reach than you have and swapping lenses is not practical.
Optically it uses high-refractive-index SR elements and large-aperture aspherical lenses, with internal flocking to reduce stray light. Flocking is one of those unglamorous details that separates good optics from cheap ones — internal reflections off bare metal are a major cause of veiling flare and reduced contrast, particularly with a light source just outside the frame.
The feature we would single out, though, is built-in back focus adjustment. Anyone who has set up a cine lens knows the routine: mount it, discover the flange distance is fractionally out, then remove the lens and start fitting shims. Being able to adjust back focus without dismounting anything removes a fiddly job from set, and on a paid shoot that is time you are not spending on the actual work.
Both mounts are stainless steel and precision machined to prevent binding during mounting — sensible for an accessory that will be swapped repeatedly.
