DJI’s new RS 5 raises tracking, torque, and runtime limits

DJI has unveiled the RS 5, its latest camera stabiliser and one of the most advanced lightweight gimbals ever released in the Ronin Series. Designed for solo videographers and mirrorless creators, the RS 5 introduces a significant upgrade in tracking, stability, and operating efficiency, while also improving runtime and compatibility within DJI’s broader production ecosystem.

The star feature of the RS 5 is the RS Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module, an evolution of DJI’s earlier tracking system that now allows videographers to frame and follow subjects directly via the gimbal’s touchscreen. The system can track not just people but also vehicles, pets, or inanimate objects, locking onto subjects up to 10 metres away. If a subject leaves the frame, reacquisition is automatic. The magnetic mounting system also eliminates the need for adapters, making it quick to deploy on set.

Stabilisation has also seen a major leap forward. DJI’s new 5th-generation RS stabilisation algorithm increases peak motor torque by 50%, offering better control during rapid movements, angle changes, and vertical shoots. It performs especially well during high-motion scenes, such as walking, running, or handheld tracking.

Compact and versatile, the RS 5 weighs only 1.46kg with its battery grip and plates, yet supports camera loads up to 3kg. Native vertical shooting is now faster than ever, thanks to a 3rd-gen vertical mode switch that requires no additional parts. A new Z-Axis Indicator has been added, helping operators adjust their walking pattern for smoother handheld performance.

The RS 5 also focuses on creative usability. The Electronic Briefcase Handle allows for top-down or low-angle shots with joystick control, supporting one-handed operation and reducing wrist fatigue. Meanwhile, a full charge takes just one hour, a 60% improvement over the RS 4, and the new BG70 High-Capacity Battery Grip boosts runtime to an impressive 30 hours, ideal for all-day filming.

In terms of connectivity, the RS 5 expands Bluetooth shutter control to include Panasonic and Fujifilm cameras, alongside Sony, Canon, and Nikon. DJI also provides full integration with its broader pro ecosystem: the RS 5 supports two DJI Focus Pro Motors for on-gimbal zoom and focus control, and can be paired with DJI SDR Transmission for remote monitoring and camera operation.

Balancing has also been refined with Teflon™, lined fine-tuning knobs on all axis arms, ensuring smooth setup even with larger mirrorless rigs. And for developers or rig builders, the RSA Communication Port and open RS SDK offer expanded third-party support.

All told, the DJI RS 5 is more than a stabiliser, it’s a creative control hub for serious videographers looking to maximise mobility, precision, and subject tracking on set.
