Chinese camera manufacturer Xiaomi has debuted its first mirrorless camera, the YI M1 – price tag £330/£250 with a 12-40mm f/3.5-5.6 lens kit.

Known primarily for its action cameras, Xiaomi’s new CSC, the YI M1 promises the ease of a camera phone with the features of a professional camera at a bargain basement price.

Of course, we’ve yet to test it. Free lunches, and all. But on paper the YI M1 promises 20-megapixel resolution from a Sony IMX269 image sensor, sensitivity up to ISO 25,600 and a Micro Four Thirds mount, opening it up to more than 50 different lenses.

The YI M1 also comes with two lens kit options: a 12-40mm f/3.5-5.6 and 42.5mm f/1.8 optics.

Aimed at beginners, the YI M1 also features a Master Guide mode via a free YI M1 app that offers composition guides and templates and step-by-step tutorials.

Other features include a 3in touchscreen on the back of the camera and built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

As for the body design, lets just say it bears such a striking resemblance – and moniker – to a certain German camera manufacturer that one could be forgiven for wanting a lawsuit or a paternity test. For now, colour us intrigued!
